Communication skills are one of the key factors in the prevention and treatment of psychological disorders in adolescents, including depression and susceptibility to substance abuse. During this critical developmental phase, adolescents face numerous social and emotional challenges, and their inability to establish effective communication with family, peers, and society can lead to psychological problems. Adolescents with weak communication skills often experience feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and isolation, which can eventually lead to depression. Furthermore, these adolescents may resort to substance abuse as a means of escaping personal difficulties, rather than seeking social support. Research has shown that communication skills such as active listening, expressing emotions in a healthy way, and building positive relationships can help reduce stress and anxiety in adolescents, thus lowering the risk of depression and substance abuse. Additionally, adolescents who can effectively cope with life’s problems and crises tend to be more resilient to social and environmental pressures and are less likely to turn to addiction. This article examines the impact of communication skills on the prevention of depression and substance abuse in adolescents, emphasizing the importance of teaching these skills as a preventive approach. Ultimately, by presenting educational models and practical solutions, this paper highlights the role of communication skills in reducing the risk of these psychological issues in adolescents and emphasizes the importance of social and family support in strengthening these skills.
